Raised beds are a great way to add a different, yet practical feature to your garden. Ideal for any garden, raised beds can be especially useful in areas of poor soil as the soil in the raised bed area can be of better quality to help your plants off to a good start.

This can be important when growing vegetables in very stony soil as stones can make it harder for them to grow and can cause oddly shaped vegetables as a result. Raised beds aren't likely to get weeds, especially if they are closely planted. They are lower maintenance to work on as you will not be walking on the soil and compacting it.

How to Choose your Raised Bed

When choosing the size and shape of your raised bed, ensure you will be able to easily reach all areas. Also, consider where you will be installing your raised beds as they will be best in sunlight or dappled shade, and being near the garden tap or water butt is a bonus.

  • By using raised beds of different shapes and sizes you can make interesting features in your garden, and if needed you could use a raised bed to screen wheely bins and compost bins from view.
  • Another great feature of a raised bed is the fact that they are higher than the surrounding ground level, and you can make them just the right height for you. This makes the raised beds an awful lot easier to work on, saving your back and knees as there is a lot less bending down to do.
  • Raised beds can also be ideal for anyone with mobility issues as you could make them just the right height to work at from a sitting position, meaning that you can still garden independently.
  • Raised beds could also be a great idea for children to have their own little garden to work on, maybe growing vegetables and herbs so they can learn where these foods come from.

Our Range of Raised Beds

Raised beds can be made from many materials, you could use wood or stone for a natural more rustic appearance or metal and rubberised panels for a more modern, contemporary look. You could even have trellises or a framework over the top of your raised bed to form a place to grow scrambling or climbing plants, ie sweet peas or clematis for a pretty cottage garden effect.

There are also larger raised bed type kits that you can place directly onto your garden, they are made in several heights and shapes to suit all sorts of uses. You can get raised beds with built-in garden seating, so you can sit back and enjoy your garden too. There are many materials you could make raised beds from if you are not using a raised bed kit.

Many materials are recycled such as;

  • Old railway sleepers
  • Scaffolding boards
  • Old bricks

All these would be environmentally friendly ideas. With recycled materials check first that they haven't been treated with any chemicals that would have a bad effect on your plants, you could always line the inside of the planter if needed.

Using Raised Beds in your Garden

Organising your Garden with Raised Beds

Raised beds are a great way of making your garden really neat and tidy. You will have a firm edge to mow up to if your raised beds are surrounded by grass, which makes for easier gardening.

Rasied Beds for a Vegetable Garden

For a vegetable garden, you could use the framework for runner beans or peas or have a polytunnel to give you a longer growing season and protect your crops. There are ready-made raised beds that you can simply place on your garden patio, for easy quick planting. These are great for herbs ready for the kitchen or for adding a splash of colour, full of bright annual plants.

As we all need to encourage more bees and other pollinators to our gardens, a raised bed full of bright bee-friendly plants would be a great help to them.
