Spray Foam Insulation

With spray gun applicators available for professionals and hand-held aerosol cans for the DIY enthusiast, more and more people are choosing Spray Foam Insulation as an efficient, affordable and practical way to reduce their both their energy bills and their carbon footprint.

Uses

Spray Foam Insulation (not to be confused with expanding foams) is a popular choice for insulating the voids in new build properties, particularly those areas where cavities exist which are difficult to fill with alternative insulating materials. Sprayed into a void or cavity and capable of expanding to over 100 times its original volume to create an airtight seal, Spray Insulation is perfect for loft spaces, cavity walls, floor joists and a whole host of other large cavities.

When used in this way, it is best applied by experienced professionals. However, it availability in a wide range of types and applicators, such as those offered by the Bond It range, which includes hand-held aerosols makes it useful for the home handyman who is looking to use Spray Foam Insulation to decrease heat loss from the home by filling voids around ventilation and heating systems, as well as gaps around windows, doors and pipes.

Making a Choice

It is difficult to choose between Spray Foam Insulation and alternative forms of insulation when insulating a home. Properly applied, Foam Insulation is extremely effective and can fill all areas of a void or cavity. Rigid foam board will only cost about three quarters that price but is not as efficient at creating air-tight insulation. A far cheaper option would be mineral wool which only costs a quarter of the price of insulating foam but doesn't fill the voids as effectively as the foam.

  • With an R Value of between three and half and six and a half per inch, a four inches void filled with foam can provide an R Value as high as R26.
  • Other advantages of using Spray Foam Insulation to fill voids and cavities is that it reduces damp, mould and mildew, in addition to deterring pests and insects by making the cavity airtight.

Nothing insulates tricky and hard to reach spaces as effectively as Spray Foam Insulation which can expand to a hundred times its original volume to create a well-insulated void with an airtight seal
